Nurse Prescribing Changes in DLM 202 (Summer 2006)

• In Wales, supplementary prescribers (SPs) must enter a HSW registration number in Identifiers (Control Panel - File Maintenance - Staff). Non-SPs will not have the HSW registration number. SPs cannot prescribe controlled drugs. Nurse prescribers are not selectable from the Prescription Manager picklist as they cannot sign prescription in Wales, but only re-authorise under their own names.
• In England, from May 2006, independent prescribing is permitted for nurses and pharmacists from a full formulary (excluding most controlled drugs). Tick the Supplementary Prescribing box in Staff (Control Panel). Where the nurse has not ticked Supplementary Prescribing, the extended nurse prescriber functions as before selecting from a Nurse Formulary.
