First-time dispensing to a patient
This topic explains how to start dispensing items to an MDS patient. The initial assumption is that the prescription is for regular medication for a patient residing at a care home already established in your Pharmacy Manager system, and that the medication is being prepared shortly in advance of the period.
If the item is for immediate dispensing, for example, not part of an future cycle, it should be treated as a mid-cycle course of treatment, for example, it would be anything that commences after the start date of the current period and before the start date of the next period.
Non-EPS prescriptions created on MDS tab
If you have not yet dispensed any non-EPS prescriptions
for your selected patient, this can be done from the MDS
tab. Select each patient in turn and View - &
- their script records.
If the patient has no regular medication defined, the patient
cycle grid screen will be empty - this is correct at this point.
-
Click on the New supply button at the bottom, or press &.
This takes you to the normal Dispensary screen.
The Number of Items
defaults to 1. You must change
it now if there is more than one item.
Follow normal dispensing processes. Pay particular attention to the quantity (normally in multiples of 28 if you are on a 28-day MDS system).
Dose Instructions
In the directions box, type in the instructions from the
prescription using the codes set up in the Nursing Home Details.
If the details have been set up correctly, then the system will understand
when the items are to be administered. e.g. 1 T means three times
a day.
If not, you will see a warning message.
In this event, you need to tell the system what times of day this medication will be taken.
Press Item Details key.
This takes you into Monitored Dosage Details. You can change
the settings here.
See Monitored Dosage tab.
If the patient has had acute prescription items dispensed previously that you now want to set as regular medication items,
See Dispense MDS regular items.
To amend a time, select the nearest time to the one you want and click Edit.
The Enter Time box appears.
Change the Time to the correct one - you can enter BED for bed-time, for example;
Enter quantity to be taken AT THAT TIME; e.g. 2, not 28.
Click OK then OK to continue. to the Dispensary screen.
Print and finish dispensing in the usual way- issue, etc.
The system reverts to the Patient cycle screen.
