Mid-cycle dispensing

From time to time a prescription may be issued for that course of medication that does not synchronise with the care-home MAR period. This may arise for any one of a number of different reasons:

  • A short course of antibiotics which may start and finish within an existing period.

  • The course of treatment may need to start immediately and cannot wait for the start of the next period. Consequently, it could overlap the end of one period and the start of another.

  • The course of treatment may be intended as continuous, but start at a different time to the regular time period. In such an instance it needs to be brought in line with the regular period

A mid-cycle course of treatment would be anything that commences after the start date of the current period.

In this illustration, such an example would be treatment starting on 3rd December.

  • For a paper prescription click the New supply button.

The Mid-cycle item details screen appears:

The default Start date is today's date. If the treatment is not starting until tomorrow, change the date accordingly.

Frequency

The mid-cycle prescription will either be for a short course of treatment (Acute) or be the start of what will be an ongoing course of treatment that is going to commence before the next period is due to begin (Regular).

  • Select either Acute or Regular.

  • Click the OK button.

  • Dispense the prescription following normal procedures

This provides the option to print MAR charts for only the mid-cycle items rather all the current items as well. It avoids a clinical safety issue that may arise when providing a home with duplicated sheets.

Acute mid-cycle item within the period

Effectively, Pharmacy Manager determines which prescriptions are mid-cycle based on the current cycle dates.

This example illustrates a mid-cycle course of treatment that both starts and finishes within the current period.
