Additional information

Additional information may be printed on a prescription token or dispensing token. When it is included in a downloaded prescription token, it is also displayed during the patient selection wizard.

Medication specific clinical information

The first use is for additional clinical information relating to a prescribed medication item. Typically this would be for clinical information that cannot be conveyed within dosage instructions.

Examples of medication specific additional instructions are:

  • Patient or medication-specific instructions for example instructions for the patient to arrange an appointment with the prescriber for a blood test or guidance on a change to the patient’s medication regimen;

  • The patient’s review date if within 4 weeks; and

  • When the last repeat prescription authorised by the prescriber is dispensed

It is a requirement that additional clinical information relating to a prescribed medication item must be made available to the dispenser. Consequently, it is included on the virtual prescription.

Patient specific clinical information

The second use is for patient specific clinical information.

This will be used to communicate a single information statement for the patient.

Examples include:

  • A full list of the patient’s ‘repeat’ medication (as received in the electronic prescription message);

  • The patient’s review date (where greater than 4 weeks); and

  • Information on the number of times the medication can be reordered from the prescriber without a review.

It is a requirement that patient specific clinical information must be made available to the patient. Consequently, it is printed onto the right hand side of the dispensing token.

When relevant patient information is included in a downloaded prescription message, it is also displayed during the Pharmacy Manager patient selection wizard.

Pharmacy staff will not be required to pass on non-clinical information linked to the services offered by another provider for example practice hours or an advert for a flu clinic.
