How to Include Drug Class List
- Position the cursor one line before where you want to put the new Drug Class. Click on and add a suitable sub-heading first, for example, Anti-platelet drugs.
- Then click on the Add a drug class list icon
- A list displays of the main headings of drug classes, similar to BNF chapters.
- Click once on the main heading you want to prescribe, eg Cardiovascular system, and expand the list underneath. Then click on the sub-heading so it is framed, eg AntiPlatelet Drugs. In some case there are further levels.
Note - Clicking again on an expanded heading will close it up again. Click OK.
The Drug List by Drug Class screen is then displayed. The drug class you have selected is shown in the Title window. If you are satisfied with your choice, skip to step 6.
- Optionally, you can use Select if you want to return to the Drug Class list to reselect a different drug class.
- Optionally, if you want to specify the drug class by first selecting a drug, click on Select by Drug.
- On the Select Drug Class by Drug - Add screen:
- Either double click in the top window of Select Drug Class by Drug - Add or press <F3> and select the drug required, using the Drug Dictionary as usual.
- Or type a drug name in the top window of Select Drug Class by Drug - Add and press Enter. The nearest match displays, listing the drug classes in which your selection appears. If you are not satisfied, double click in the top window and choose the drug from the drug dictionary.
- For example, selecting Aspirin 75mg tablets, lists the drug class of Non-opioid analgesics and Antiplatelet drugs.
- Click to highlight the drug class want. Click on OK. The correct Drug Class should appear in the Title window of the Drug List by Drug Class screen.
- On the Drug List by Drug Class screen:
- If Formulary is checked, this will restrict the selection of the Drug class from the Formulary; and unchecked to the whole drug dictionary.
- If either All Generics and Discontinued are checked, these will respectively include all generics and discontinued drugs.
- Show Repeat Masters - check this box if you want an Active Repeat Masters line displayed on the Guideline, under which is listed any repeat masters or issues from within the same Drug Class that you have selected.
- Choose which of the Preferred List options is required. At the Drug List by Drug Class screen, the preferred list is those drugs from the selected Drug Class on the guideline which you prefer to prescribe.

The preferred list options are:
- Add to Preferred List Automatically - After prescribing the drug, no prompt will be given (for dosage, quantity and age range) before the drug is placed on the Preferred Drug List for this Drug class (see the section on Prescribing from a Guideline).
- Prompt to add to Preferred List - After prescribing the drug, a Add to Preferred List screen displays so you can enter default dosage, quantity, treatment days and age range.
- Never add to Preferred List - After prescribing this drug, it will not be added to the Preferred Drug List.
- Click on OK.
- A new line is created on the Guideline (with the heading Active Repeat Masters if selected) and the drug class you chose (eg Anti-Platelet Drugs).
- Click on Save before clicking on to turn Maintenance off, and view the Guideline in normal mode.
