Community and Nursing READ codes
In a recent READ dictionary update Quarter 1 2000, over 4,500 READ codes and terms were included which cover the clinical processes of health care workers other than GPs:
Community codes, nursing care, midwifery, health visitors, chiropody, dietetics, physiotherapy, orthoptic treatment, speech therapy, counselling and psychotherapy, and some complementary therapies, and a few administrative terms.
These are part of the yet unreleased Version 3 of READ and, as an interim solution, have been included in Chapter Z.
Note that there are consequently a number of duplicate terms, for example, 8C1Nursing care and Z1 Nursing Care. In READ version 2, you may have currently been using 8C1.. Nursing care. The equivalent Z code Z1… Nursing care contains additional useful and necessary hierarchical terms.
It is important to note that when recording data using the Z1… hierarchical terms, a hierarchical search of Z1 is necessary – in a new Search, Add Entity – Medical History, Selections – READ code for generalentity, select Z1...00 Nursing care and make sure to tick the box Hierarchical Search (beneath READ Select window); so the entry reads Of TypeZ1… 00 Nursing care.
Z1… as an individual term should not be used but rather 8C1.. in order to remain compatible with previous data entry.
